Same but Different: American Furniture and their British Antecedents

An exploration of American furniture from the colonial period through the early Republic, tracing its roots in the furniture-making traditions of Great Britain. Examining how English, Scottish, Welsh, and Irish design influences were adapted by American craftsmen to suit regional tastes, available materials, and the practical realities of everyday life in America. With a special focus on the vernacular acclimatization of British styles and forms in the American backcountry, along with a comparison of paralleling German and French influences.
